Dale Exit Challenge Cup After Narrow Defeat at Banstead

Petts Wood & Holmesdale's involvement in the SCEFL Challenge Cup came to an early end on Tuesday evening, as a second-half penalty proved the difference in a 1-0 defeat away to Banstead Athletic.

Played in front of a vocal home crowd, the tie began positively for Dale, who enjoyed the better of the early exchanges without quite finding their rhythm in possession. Armani-Jordan Martin provided the first sight of goal, controlling a pass well before firing over the crossbar, while Mo Diaby was influential throughout the opening period, driving the team forward from midfield.

Banstead gradually grew into the contest and came close to taking the lead when a corner delivery was struck against the crossbar after eight minutes. Reece Hobbs was then called into action to make an excellent one-on-one save, as the hosts began to apply pressure.

Despite Banstead's threat, Dale created the best opportunities of the first half. Martin was denied by a superb save from the Banstead goalkeeper on 28 minutes, before Joel Wakefield was thwarted in another one-on-one situation shortly afterwards. Hobbs was also required to produce a fine stop from a driven free-kick to keep the scores level.

With chances at both ends, the sides went into the interval sheds locked at 0-0.

Banstead started the second half strongly and missed a good opportunity moments after the restart, before continuing to cause problems with their pace and direct attacking play.

Dale looked to change the momentum through their bench, with Jesse Rowe introduced just before the hour mark, followed shortly by Mecca Samuels. The substitute immediately provided an attacking spark, bursting beyond his marker and delivering a dangerous cross that looked destined for Lewis Heywood, only for a Banstead defender to intervene at the last moment.

However, as the half wore on, Dale struggled to build sustained pressure, with a series of misplaced passes allowing the hosts to claim territorial control. The decisive moment arrived in the 77th minute, when Banstead were awarded a penalty following a promising attacking move. Substitute Frankie Harris converted from the spot a minute later to put the home side ahead.

Petts Wood & Holmesdale pushed forward in search of an equaliser. A dangerous cross narrowly evaded the far post before a frantic goalmouth scramble late on almost brought the leveller, but Banstead held firm to see out the contest.

While it was a disappointing evening for Dale, credit must go to Banstead Athletic, who were ultimately worthy winners and progress to the next round.

Attention now turns back to league action, with Petts Wood & Holmesdale travelling to Bearsted on Saturday, looking to get back to winning ways.
