Petts Wood & Holmesdale's new era could hardly have begun in better fashion as Dale kicked off the 2026/27 campaign with a hard-fought 3-2 victory away to Phoenix Sports, claiming all three points with a dramatic stoppage-time winner.

The visitors made an aggressive start, pressing Phoenix relentlessly from the opening whistle and forcing the hosts onto the back foot. Phoenix managed to play their way out of the early pressure, but Michael Fenn was alert to throw himself in front of the first effort on goal.

There were already signs of the progress made during pre-season. Communication across the pitch looked far stronger than last season, while wing-back Frank McCormack recovered brilliantly to outpace a Phoenix attacker and clear the danger. New signing Armani Jordan-Martin also gave supporters an early glimpse of his quality, producing a delightful cross in the fifth minute that almost picked out waiting striker Lewis Heywood at the far post.

Despite showing flashes of promise, Dale found it difficult to establish the slick passing football that had been such a feature of pre-season during the first half. Phoenix threatened on the counter, with one penalty appeal waved away after a challenge from Frank McCormack before another attack saw the hosts round the goalkeeper, but fire over the crossbar.

The breakthrough arrived in the 16th minute when Phoenix captain Taylor Fisher reacted quickest to a loose ball and curled an excellent finish into the bottom corner.

If there was one thing this new-look Dale side showed immediately, it was resilience.

Barely a minute later, Paul Lee restored parity with Petts Wood & Holmesdale's first competitive goal of both the season and of the new era, arriving at the back post to apply the finishing touch for 1-1....He nearly repeated the feat moments later, only to be denied by a smart save.

Jordan-Martin continued to impress for Dale, beating his marker on a number of occasions, while Phoenix also had opportunities before the interval. With chances at both ends, the sides went into half-time level after an entertaining opening 45 minutes.

Dale began the second half brightly. Conor Evans came within inches of producing one of the goals of the season, striking a superb half-volley that seemed destined for the top corner until an outstanding fingertip save denied him.

Phoenix defended stubbornly through the middle, forcing Petts Wood & Holmesdale to attack from wide areas. Substitute James Teodorescu injected fresh energy into the contest, repeatedly driving at the home defence and helping Dale build momentum.

On 56' Phoenix regained the lead with a fierce strike into the corner, but Dale once again refused to fold. A handball inside the box presented the visitors with a lifeline and Tunmise Akanni made no mistake from the penalty spot, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way to make it 2-2.

With time running out, Petts Wood & Holmesdale continued to push for a winner and their perseverance was rewarded deep into stoppage time, with what turned out to be the winner. Captain Ryan Mahal rose highest from a corner on 92' to power home a bullet header and spark jubilant celebrations among the travelling support.

Phoenix threw everything forward in the closing minutes, but Dale stood firm. New goalkeeper Reece Hobbs had the final say, confidently claiming the last ball of the match to seal a memorable victory.

It was a performance that summed up the spirit of this new Petts Wood & Holmesdale side, resilient, determined and together. Three points on the opening day provides the perfect platform for the season ahead and an outstanding start to a new era at the club.

Attention now turns to the FA Cup, where Dale welcome Tooting & Mitcham Utd in what promises to be another exciting chapter.
